Improved Metro Connectivity To Noida International – Jewar Airport

Did you know an agreement was signed between the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on 13 December 2022? According to the agreement, DMRC was appointed to provide a detailed project report for the second phase of the proposed metro corridor between the IGI Airport in Delhi and Jewar Airport near the Noida-Greater Noida-Yamuna Expressway (YXP). 

It should be noted that the Yamuna Expressway Authority gave Rs 2 crore to DMRC for preparing the report. For those who don’t know, the planned Metro corridor has a budget of up to Rs 15,000 crore.

More Details About The Metro Corridor

The planned metro corridor will be 66 kilometres long. It will connect the under-construction Jewar Airport to the New Delhi Metro Station. Of course, it will add convenience to the lives of passengers who will be able to interchange and board the airport express metro to travel from NDLS metro station to IGI airport. 

Moreover, two metro rail stretches will be developed. One will be located between Knowledge Park in Greater Noida and Noida Airport. The other one will go from Knowledge Park to New Delhi Railway Station. 

Interestingly, a connection already exists to the Airport Express from New Delhi Railway Station for Delhi Airport. 

DMRC has claimed that it will only take an hour to go from IGI Airport to Jewar Airport after the new line becomes operational. In case you are wondering, phase 1 of the metro route to the under-construction international airport has a deadline of September 2024. 

On the other hand, Noida International Airport’s construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Don’t forget this is a project costing the government thousands of crores. Ultimately, this airport will cater to passengers from different areas, including Uttar Pradesh. 

In addition to this, it will also drive foot traffic from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The idea of the metro route and similar projects are aimed at improving Jewar Airport’s connectivity. For instance, the yellow line of the Delhi Metro will connect the under-construction airport with Delhi’s International Airport.  

Discussing The Metro Route & Stations

This line’s route is divided into two sections. For starters, the first will go between Noida Airport and Knowledge Park, near the Noida-Greater Noida-Yamuna Expressway (YXP). The other route will take travellers from Knowledge Park to New Delhi Railway Station.

Here are four locations in Noida that have been picked by officials to build stations:

  • Techzone
  • Noida International Airport, Jewar
  • Knowledge Park-2
  • The International Film City

Similarly, some locations, including sectors 18,19, 20, 28, and 29, could also be chosen to build three more stations. The authorities also have plans to construct one underground station at the Noida International Airport. An interchange terminal for the Aqua line metro from Noida to Greater Noida will also be provided at Knowledge Park-2 metro station. 

Distance & Projected Cost of the Metro Link

The metro line between Indira Gandhi International Airport and Noida International Airport has a distance of 72 km. The first phase covers 35.6 km, going from Jewar Airport to Greater Noida. 

The second phase will cover the rest of the distance, i.e., 36.4 km, connecting Knowledge Park to Delhi. Furthermore, the remaining distance to the IGI Airport will be covered via the current Airport Express Line. 

The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 13,000 crore. It is one of the most highly anticipated projects, which the Greater Noida Authority, the Noida Authority, the Uttar Pradesh government, YEIDA, and the federal government will fund. 

What is The Current Status of The Metro Route Project? 

As mentioned earlier, DMRC is preparing the detailed project report for the 36-kilometre-long Metro Line from Greater Noida to New Delhi. However, the report was delayed as the DMRC had requested for more time for the survey. As a result, DMRC plans to submit the report by the end of June. 

The proposed Metro Line is all about improving the connectivity of the new airport in Noida. It would connect Indira Gandhi International Airport to the under-construction Noida International Airport in Jewar. 

The first phase of the airport is expected to become operational by the time 2024 ends. To clarify, the Yamuna Authority already has the detailed project report for the 35.6 km link between Knowledge Park-2 and Jewar. The report was forwarded to the Uttar Pradesh government in August 2022. 

As far as the second phase is concerned, its detailed project report is incomplete for now since the initial destination and geo-technology survey are currently underway to identify the best locations for building the proposed stations. 

Work on the 72-km-long Metro Route to enhance Jewar Airport’s connectivity with key areas in the NCR will start after the government approves both project reports. The airport line will offer direct access to IGI Airport from Jewar. Isn’t that amazing?
